VA Announces return to in-person work policy.

WASHINGTON â€” In a recent video message from his desk at VA Central Office, Secretary of Veterans Affairs Doug Collins addressed media concerns that Veterans’ benefits might be targeted for cuts.

Meet the new VA Secretary

Douglas A. Collins, confirmed as the 12th United States Secretary of Veterans Affairs on February 4, 2025, brings a diverse background in military service, law, and public policy to the role. Born on August 16, 1966, in Gainesville, Georgia, Collins earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of North Georgia, a Master of Divinity from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, and a Juris Doctor from Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School. 

Collins’ military career began in the late 1980s as a U.S. Navy chaplain. Following the September 11 attacks, he joined the U.S. Air Force Reserve as a chaplain, attaining the rank of colonel. In 2008, he deployed to Balad Air Force Base in Iraq, gaining firsthand experience with the challenges faced by service members. 

From 2013 to 2021, Collins represented Georgia’s 9th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives. During his tenure, he served as the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee and was recognized for his strong advocacy on veterans’ issues. In 2020, he campaigned for a U.S. Senate seat in Georgia. 

As VA Secretary, Collins oversees a vast department with a budget exceeding $350 billion, dedicated to providing healthcare and benefits to approximately 18 million veterans. He has pledged to streamline regulations, reduce wait times, and enhance the quality of care for veterans, emphasizing his commitment to those who have served the nation.
