A - C

  • Appeal

  • The process of challenging a VA decision if your claim is denied or underrated. Includes Higher-Level Review, Supplemental Claim, and Board Appeal.

  • Buddy Statement

  • A written statement from a fellow service member, family member, or friend supporting your claim by providing firsthand knowledge of your condition.

  • Combined Disability Rating

  • Board of Veterans’ Appeals (BVA)

  • A part of the VA that reviews appeals and makes final decisions on disability claims.

  • Compensation & Pension (C&P) Exam

  • Condition Worsening

  • A situation where a veteran’s service-connected disability gets worse over time, possibly qualifying them for a rating increase.

D - G

  • Decision Letter

  • The official VA notification stating whether your claim was approved, denied, or rated at a certain percentage.

  • Disability Compensation

  • Tax-free monthly payments provided to veterans with service-connected disabilities.

  • Evidence (Medcial & Service Records)

  • Supporting documents that help prove a disability is service-connected. Includes medical records, private doctor opinions, buddy statements, and military service records.

  • Denied Claim

  • A claim the VA rejects due to insufficient evidence, incorrect paperwork, or lack of service connection. Denied claims can be appealed.

  • Effective Date

  •  The date from which the VA begins paying disability benefits, often the date of claim submission.

  • Fully Developed Claim (FDC)

  • A streamlined VA claims process where the veteran submits all required evidence upfront, reducing processing time.

H - M

  • Higher-Level Review (HLR) 

  • A type of appeal where a senior VA reviewer re-evaluates your case without submitting new evidence.

  • Lay Statement

  • A personal statement from the veteran describing their condition, how it affects their daily life, and its connection to military service.

  • Military Service Records

  • Documents showing a veteran’s service history, including deployments, injuries, and medical treatments received while in service.

  • Individual Unemployability (TDIU) 

  • A benefit for veterans who cannot work due to a service-connected disability, allowing them to receive 100% disability compensation even if their rating is below 100%.

  • Medical Nexus Letter

  • A letter from a doctor linking a veteran’s disability to their military service, often critical for claim approval.

N - R

  • Nexus (Service Connection) 

  • The link between a veteran’s disability and their military service. Without a proven nexus, the VA may deny a claim.

  • Presumptive Condition

  • A disability that the VA automatically considers service-connected for certain veterans, such as those exposed to Agent Orange or burn pits.

  • Rating Decision

  • The VA’s ruling on a claim, including whether it is approved, denied, or assigned a specific disability percentage.

  • Notice of Disagreement (NOD)

  • A formal request to appeal a VA decision.

  • PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) 

  • A mental health condition commonly recognized as a service-connected disability due to combat, military sexual trauma (MST), or other traumatic events in service.

  • Residual Functional Capacity (RFC) 

  • An assessment of how much a veteran’s condition affects their ability to work.

S - Z

  • Service Connection

  • The link between a veteran’s current disability and their military service. Can be direct, secondary, or presumptive.

  • Total and Permanent (T&P) Disability

  • A VA designation that means a veteran’s disability is 100% disabling and unlikely to improve, granting them lifetime benefits.

  • VA Schedule for Rating Disabilities (VASRD)

  • The official VA disability rating system used to determine compensation percentages.

  • Supplemental Claim

  • A type of appeal where new and relevant evidence is submitted to support a denied claim.

  • VA Disability Benefits Questionnaire (DBQ) 

  • A form used by VA and private doctors to evaluate a veteran’s disability for rating purposes.

  • Veterans Service Organization (VSO)

  • Nonprofit organizations like the DAV, VFW, and American Legion that offer free claims assistance.
